Reserves Begin New Era Against Winstanley
Newton-le-Willows Reserves welcome Cheshire League One opposition to the Sports Club as their Presidents Cup campaign gets under way.
Newton-le-Willows Reserves begin their 2026/27 campaign this afternoon when they welcome Winstanley FC to Newton-le-Willows Sports Club in the Cheshire Football League Presidents Cup.
The match kicks off at 2:00pm and will be the Reserves’ first competitive fixture under new joint player-managers Lewis Appleby and Ste Lyddon.
Although the Presidents Cup forms part of the clubs’ pre-season preparations, the competition provides an opportunity to compete for silverware and adds a competitive edge to the build-up to the new league campaign.
The Reserves will compete in Cheshire Football League Reserve League Two this season, while today’s opponents will provide a strong early test.
Winstanley finished ninth in Cheshire Football League One last season and will compete in the same division as Newton’s newly promoted First Team during the 2026/27 campaign.
The fixture will also mark competitive Newton debuts for new signings Ollie Foy and Mike Winer. Goalkeeper Foy and Winer are both in line to make their first appearances for the club as the Reserves begin a new chapter under their recently appointed management team.
Appleby and Lyddon were named joint player-managers during the summer and will take charge of the side competitively for the first time this afternoon.
With a new management team in place and new additions to the squad, the match offers Newton an opportunity to test themselves against higher-division opposition while beginning their campaign with a competitive home fixture.
