Newton Make Winning Start With 2-0 Victory Over Egerton

Phil Rigby

Newton-le-Willows made the perfect start to life in Cheshire Football League One with a 2-0 victory over Egerton at Newton-le-Willows Sports Club.

After last season’s promotion, Newton started brightly and took the lead after just eight minutes.

Owen Walker reacted quickest inside the Egerton box, nicking the ball away from the advancing goalkeeper before being brought down. There was little argument over the decision and Matty Smith stepped up to calmly convert the resulting penalty.

Newton doubled their advantage on 21 minutes with an excellent finish from Craig Winer. A ball was sent across from the left and Winer caught it sweetly on the half-volley, firing past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

The hosts continued to look dangerous before the break, with Charlie Eden coming closest to adding a third when his free-kick crashed back off the crossbar.

At the other end, Newton remained in control. The defence stayed solid throughout, while the midfield worked tirelessly to close Egerton down and prevent the visitors from building any real momentum.

That left Alfie Speakman with very little to do in goal, although he looked safe and assured whenever called upon.

Newton continued to create chances after the break. Walker was denied by the crossbar following a superb team move down the left-hand side, while Anthony Plant went close when he met a ball played in from the right but directed his close-range effort straight at the goalkeeper.

Rio Gill also impressed after coming off the bench for his competitive Newton debut. He showed plenty of strength and skill and was denied a first goal for the club by an excellent save late in the second half.

Newton saw out the closing stages comfortably to secure a deserved three points and a clean sheet.

Walker was named Player of the Match following a tireless performance up front. He won the penalty for the opening goal, struck the crossbar and caused problems throughout with his work rate and movement.

It was ultimately a strong all-round team performance and an encouraging start to Newton’s first campaign in League One.
