Welding was part of the management team that guided Newton to the Cheshire Football League 2 title during the 2025/26 season, working alongside former manager Daniel Farrell as the club secured promotion to League 1.

He stepped down from his official role alongside Farrell at the end of the campaign but continued to support the team behind the scenes during the early stages of the new season.

Following discussions with joint player-managers Ben Crowe and Anthony Plant, Welding has now agreed to return to the dugout and take up the assistant manager position.

His return brings further experience, continuity and knowledge of the squad to the new-look management team. Having played an important role in last season’s success, Welding already understands the standards and culture that Crowe and Plant are looking to build upon.

The appointment also strengthens the support available to the joint managers as Newton adjust to life in League 1 and look to continue progressing both on and off the pitch.
